Touchpad UI

A-dec touchpad UI, Jason Alvarez industrial design 
PROJECT GOALS

The goal was to introduce capacitive touch technology into a UI platform built to last 20 years in the field, without alienating an existing customer base already comfortable with the current interface. Constraints included a compact form factor, a single-color display and no room for a learning curve.

  • Conceptual Sketching

    Size constraints limited the number of buttons we could include. We knew hotkeys and multiple-modes would be be necessary to achieve the functionality required. Sketches helped outline the high level architecture.

  • Digital Prototypes

    InVision prototypes let practitioners interact with the UI before any hardware existed, surfacing navigation issues early.

  • Hardware Prototypes

    Glass was used to increase perceived value and add long-term durability.

  • Navigation

    Multiple navigation models were tested to find the simplest path through instrument control, timers, lighting and patient positioning.
