PROJECT GOALS

The design challenge was to explore how new LED technology could improve upon existing halogen based systems. High light output, low radiant heat, longer life and compact size created completely new packaging opportunities. I proposed a variety of new configurations to improve ergonomics, simplify the disinfection process, maximize maneuverability and improve illumination control.

  • Bump Switch

    To reduce infection concerns, a bump switch was created that enabled users to use the back of the hand for ON/OFF.

  • Purposeful Restraint

    Extraneous styling details and design expression were purposely restrained resulting in a clean, sophisticated look not typically found in the dental industry.

  • Indicators

    Practitioners told us that they might not know which light intensity they were using during longer procedures and it would help to know the current setting at-a-glance. The indicators were placed on a curved surface for improved visibility.

  • Prototypes

    Early mock-ups got real feedback from practitioners before the team committed to any form factor or feature set.
