Dental Control System

A-dec dental control system, Jason Alvarez industrial design 
PROJECT GOALS

The project goal was to replace A-dec’s flagship dental system with a new market leading product. The challenge wasn’t knowing what practitioners valued: efficiency, ergonomics, modern aesthetics. The real question was which features should drive the overall configuration. Early sketches, 3D modeling and simple volumetric prototypes helped determine which key features that would drive the most value for both users and A-dec.

  • Touchscreen

    A positionable touch interface ensures optimal ergonomics for both left and right-handed practitioners.

  • Work Surface and Trays

    Work surfaces and trays were positioned higher to minimize injury from sharp hand-piece burrs.

  • Freeform Positioning

    The control and tray system can be freely positioned and conveniently locked into position when handle is released.

  • Centered Handle

    Integrating the handle into the middle of the unit eliminated parts, reduced overall footprint and improved maneuverability for both left and right-handed users.

  • Configurational Sketch

    Early sketches surfaced conflicts between form and feasibility before they became expensive problems.

  • User Evaluation

    Iterative testing with practitioners helped refine ergonomics, functions and configurational details.
